The business was started by Andrew’s parents, Jim and Annie in 1952. It started out at Southill Farm, Bathgate before moving to the larger unit of Cobblehaugh at Lanark. The business was built quite rapidly by direct retailing eggs and potatoes. Milk was also produced by the family during their time at Lanark. Jim always wanted an arable unit in the east so Turin Home Farm, Forfar was the next farm to be bought. Jim and Annie moved here leaving Andrew and his older brother, John, farming in Lanarkshire.

In time, John moved to Turin Home Farm and shortly after Craignathro was bought where Andrew and Carol moved to. It is then that John and Andrew separated the business, although they still helped each other at the potatoes. In time East Ingliston was added to Craignathro and then Easter Meathie.
